The Queen is due to become Britain's longest-reigning monarch next month, and to celebrate, a new exhibition charting her years on the throne is to open next month at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
A mixture of formal portraits and relaxed family photos, the collection includes the first official photograph of Her Majesty, who is now 89, a black and white profile taken just three weeks after she took the throne in January 1952.The exhibition will open its doors on the 9th September - the same day the Queen passes the record of 63 years, 216 days set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.
All will be put on display at the three major royal palaces of Holyroodhouse, Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. The photos on display also include a recent snap of the Queen taken during this year's Order of the Garter procession at Windsor in June, which shows the Queen smiling broadly as she walks in her Garter robes.
Other images include Cecil Beaton's 1953 official Coronation Day portrait and Julian Calder s photograph of the Queen amid the heather on the Balmoral Estate, dressed in the Order of the Thistle robes.
The Queen is poised to enter the history books on September 9 when she becomes the country's longest reigning monarch. She will overtake the record held by Queen Victoria. Victoria, who became known as Empress of India during her lifetime, reigned for 23,226 days 16 hours and 23 minutes and died in 1901 aged 81 having taken the throne at 18 in June 1837.
It will be a momentous moment in British history – the point next September when the Queen becomes our longest-reigning monarch.
But a plan by Speaker John Bercow to pay tribute to Her Majesty by beaming her over a live video-link to a crowd in Westminster has been denounced as ‘tacky’ by senior Commons officials.
Mr Bercow wants September 9, 2015 – when the Queen will pass Victoria’s epic reign of 63 years 216 days – to be marked by a special commemoration in Parliament’s historic Westminster Hall.
Under the Speaker’s plan, the audience would include hundreds of guests born on the day she succeeded to the throne – February 6, 1952.
Because the Queen traditionally spends September at Balmoral, to spare her a journey south she would address the event via a camera set up in her Scottish home.
Mr Bercow believes that, given the Queen is due to speak at the Palace of Westminster in March to mark Parliament’s 750th anniversary, it would be a ‘courteous reciprocity’ to hold a celebration for her in September.
However, The Mail on Sunday understands the Queen’s representative in Parliament has led official objections to the idea. Black Rod – Lieutenant General David Leakey – who is in charge of protocol and ceremony, believes it would be ‘undignified’.
Last night royal sources said Black Rod was reflecting the Queen’s preference for a ‘quiet day’ next September, partly out of respect for Victoria’s memory: a ‘celebration’ would be inappropriate in the circumstances.
The Palace indicated that its efforts next year would instead be concentrated on marking the monarch’s 90th birthday in 2016.
After studying the precise timings of Queen Victoria’s accession and death, and taking account of 15 leap days, the Queen’s aides have calculated that she officially becomes the longest-reigning British monarch when she exceeds Queen Victoria’s tally of 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes. Victoria came to the throne, aged 18, on June 20, 1837 and died on January 22, 1901 aged 81.
The Queen, who was aged 25 when she came to the throne, overtook George III’s reign of 59 years 96 days in May 2011.
Last night, Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said: ‘This is a great achievement and a significant moment in British history. The most appropriate way to mark it would be to hold a day of loyal addresses in her honour in the Commons chamber.’
A Palace spokesman said: ‘Her Majesty traditionally spends the month at Balmoral, and there are no plans to change that.’ A Commons spokesman said: ‘At present, there are no plans to mark the fact the Queen will become the longest-serving monarch next year.’
