A Psalm of Life 人生颂
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
它的归宿决不是荒坟;
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way?
But to act, that each tomorrow
Finds us farther than today.
不是享乐,也不是受苦;
Art is long, and time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
智艺无穷,时光飞逝;
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
人生是到处扎寨安营;
Trust no future, however pleasant!
Let the dead past bury its dead!
Act-act in the living present!
Heart within, and god overhead!
A psalm of life 生命赞歌
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
WHAT THE HEART OF THE YOUNG MAN
SAID TO THE PSALMIST
TELL me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream ! —
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real ! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal ;
它的归宿不是坟;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way ;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
艺业无涯,时光飞逝;
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
在人生征途的露营;
Be not like dumb, driven cattle !
Be a hero in the strife !
Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant !
Let the dead Past bury its dead !
Act,— act in the living Present !
Heart within, and God o'erhead !
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time ;
印在时间泥砂上的踪痕;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate ;
胸怀一颗敢于担戴的心;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

A Psalm of Life
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Tell me not=don’t tell me。 Life is but…=生命只不过是….soul=灵魂slumber=睡眠,动词。
Don’t tell me in a sad song that life is nothing but an empty dream. A sleeping, inactive soul is useless and things are usually not what they seem to be.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
词汇解释:earnest=serious认真的,严肃的。grave=坟墓。goal=目标。 Dustthou art=You are dust. Thou=you, art=are,相当于英语的文言文古话。Returnest=return,返回,加了古英语的动词变位。Dust。thou art,to dust returnest来自KingJames版本圣经中的一句话:for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. Speak of=indicate,表明,意味着。
Life is real. It is not an empty dream. Life is serious. One should treat it seriously. Our goal, our aim in life is not death. We don’t live to die. “We are made of dust, when we die we turn into dust” ---that is not telling us what happens to our soul after we die. Our soul has more significance than that.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.
词汇解释:enjoyment=enjoy的名词,享受,享乐。 farther=far的比较级,更远。
To enjoy or to feel sad is not what we should do in life. We should act. We should take action. We should make progress to see that each tomorrow we are farther than today and each tomorrow we find ourselves better than today.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still,like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
fleeting=passing quickly飞驰而过,白驹过隙。 stout=strong,determined坚强有决心。
There are a lot of skills, a lot things to learn in life, but life is short and time flies. Time is passing quickly. Our hearts are brave and stout and we are determined to take action, to live each day with earnest. Our hearts are beating in our chest and the sound they make are like muffled drums beating for funeral. With time passing in life, we are all marching to death, to the grave.
